How to edit your resume like a professional resume writer Its very hard to write your own resume because a resume is a macro view of your life, but you live your life at the micro level, obsessing about daily details that have no bearing on your resume. So I recommend to a lot of people that they hire someone to help them. After all, spending money on a resume writer is one of the few expenditures that will have good return right away. But some of you will be able to do a decent job rewriting your resume on your own. The first thing youll have to do is make some mental shifts. You need to rethink the goals of a resume, and rethink the rules of a resume in order to approach the project like the best of the resume professionals. Here are three ideas that guide professional resume writers and should guide you as well: 1. Dont focus on your responsibilities, focus on what you achieved. A resume is not your life story. No one cares. If your life story were so interesting, youd have a book deal. The only things that should be on your resume are achievements. Anyone can do their job, but only a small percentage of the population can do their job well, wherever they go. The best way to show that you did your job well is from achievements. The best achievement is a promotion.It is an objective way to show that you impressed the people you work for. The next best way to show objective measures is to present quantified achievements. Most people do not think in terms of quantified achievements when they are in the job, but on the resume, thats the only part of the job that matters. No one can see that you were a good team player on your resume unless you can say established a team to solve problem x and increased sales x% or joined under-performing team and helped that team beat production delivery dates by three weeks. If you are only putting achievements on your resume, you are going to be hard-pressed to fill a whole page. Thats okay. Anything on your resume that is not an achievement is wasting space. Because you dont know what a hiring manager will look at firstand if you have ten good achievements and three mediocre lines about your life story, the hiring manager may only read those three linesso remove them. 2. Dont make your resume a moral statement; its a marketing document. Think about when a company announced the launch of their product. First of all, the product is not done. Second of all, it has bugs. And third, the company is probably showing photos of prototypes and the real thing will look different. All this stuff is fine. Its accepted practice for marketing. The company will tell you that they are doing their best to get you the information you want in the way they think is best for letting you know what your consumer options are. You need to take the same approach with your resume, because a resume is a marketing document. The best marketing documents show the product in the very best light, which means using whatever most outrageous tactics possible to make you look good. As long as you are not lying, you will be fine. Heres an example: You join a software company that just launched a product and the product had so many problems that they had to hire someone to handle the calls. You start doing the tech support, and you work tons of overtime because the calls are so backed up. You clean up the phone queue and then you start taking long lunches because theres not a lot to do, and then you start job hunting because the job is boring. Heres how you summarize this job on your resume: Assumed management responsibility for tech support and decreased call volume 20%. How do you know 20%? Who knows? It was probably more. But you cant quantify exactly, so err on the safe side. But if you just say Did tech support for a software company no one knows you did a good job. There is a fine art of almost-lying-but-not-lying on a resume. You need to talk about it a lot in order to know where you fall on the spectrum. Here is a sample of my own family discussions about what is lying and what isnt. 3. Dont give everything away in the resume. The idea of a resume is to get someone to call you. Talk with you on the phone. Offer you an interview. So a resume is like a first date. You only show your best stuff and you dont show it all. Some people dump everything they can think of onto their resume, but a resume is not the only chance youll have to sell yourself. In fact the interview is where the hard-core selling takes place. So you only put your very best achievements on the resume. Sure, there will be other questions people will want answers to, but that will make them call you. And thats good, right? For those of you who cant bear to take off the twenty extra lines on your resume because you think the interviewer has to see every single thing about you right away, consider that we have statistics to show that people dont want to know everything up front. It does not make for a good match. Of people who got married, only 3% had sex on the first date.

Why You Were Not Called Back After the Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I am a career coach specializing in the interview process. Recently, I was approached by a company for help in improving its interviewing practices. Toward that end, I prepared the necessary instructional material. But because it’s a first for me, I thought thatâ€"before I go live with it, and to see how it would goâ€"it would be smart to test the procedure on members of a job-search networking group I’ve been leading for the past ten years. The primary premise behind the idea of a uniform and structured interviewing system is that all interviewers use the same, predetermined, selected questions. Once a candidate interview is over, the members of the interviewing team get together for a consensus meeting at which the decision makers talk over what they heard the candidate say, what their individual interpretations are, and the team conclusion they wish to come to. This is a very powerful exercise because it contributes to the creation, shaping, and carrying out of the organizational culture. From what the interviewers heard, they can determine whether the candidate has the required communication and job-specific skills for the job, the required level of motivation, and the required amount of fit with the corporate culture. Nowadays, corporate-culture fit is one of the most crucial components of the hiring-decision-making process. So, at a recent group networking meeting, we role-played mock interviewing. One of the members took on the role of the candidate, and eight other members took turns asking the preselected interview questions. The interviewers paid close attention to the candidate’s answers and took notes based on their personal interpretations. The mock interview lasted about an hour, after which we held the consensus meeting and compared notes. The first question we asked ourselves was whether we should call the candidate back for a second interview. And here’s where I became utterly shocked: First, may I say that I am known as a tough grader. My standards are very high, and it is difficult to please me. In this particular case, I rated the candidate relatively high. However, four out of the eight interviewers concluded that the candidate did not meet their expectations and should not be called back for the second interview. What we can learn from this experiment is that even if job candidates themselves and some of the interviewers conclude that an interview went well, some others of the interviewers have very different vantage points: what seems logical and obvious to one can turn out to seem the very opposite to someone else. So then, what is it that can help the candidate? Luckâ€"and lots of it.

More and more people are securing new jobs!   Thats the good news.   Many of these past job seekers, sadly not all, learned how important having a solid network was.   Most of them had to build their network from scratch.   So what happens when you dont have 40 hours to network?   How will you continue to carve time into your new schedule for this valuable career insurance? 1. The easiest way to continue to nurture your relationships is to tap into LinkedIn. In less than 30 minutes a day, you can monitor and comment on the status updates within your network.   Congratulate people on new jobs, wish them well on interviews, make some thoughtful comment based on their status update.   If you are on Facebook, you could do the same thing. 2. Online networking is not a replacement for a face to face get together.   There are certainly people within your contacts that you know are key players, thought leaders, wonderful connectors, or maybe somehow needing your time.   Arrange to have a before work chat with them over coffee.   If that doesnt work, consider lunch or after hours.   One hour a week is all it will take to nurture this relationship.   How many contacts need this level of follow up is determined by you.   Flag them somehow and schedule your face to face, either monthly or quarterly. 3. You may have over committed yourself to volunteer opportunities.   Now is the time to really evaluate which activities you have time for.   Remember, bow out gracefully.   The organization was lucky to have you while they did and will understand your new time limitations.   That doesnt mean youll drop them like a hot potato.   Stay as involved as you can afford to be. 4. Now that you have some income and an employer that may pay for professional association dues, which professional association were you really wanting to join, but didnt have the money?   Before you commit, check out a meeting or event to make sure it is worthy of belonging to.   Then, ask your employer if they may be willing to sponsor your membership.   Let your employer know about the time commitment and how THEY will benefit from your being a member.   Maybe you could share the newsletter with your team or perhaps a regular debrief of current industry related topics. 5. Update your new job function and salary requirements with recruiters.   Obviously not all recruiters, but those that you felt some connection with.   Let them know you will always be looking for your next great opportunity and would be glad to help them any way you can. 6. Finally, communicate with your family and friends.   Let them know how much you appreciate their support and understanding.   Absolutely let them know about your new job.   You may hold off on all the details until youve been in the position for 30 days or so, just to be sure you have the lay of the land.   Staying connected with this very personal part of your network is so important.   They are the core of your support system.   Offer to help any of them if they ever need assistance.   Pay it forward, always!
